Four Saint Joseph's players scored in double figures led by a double-double from Sarah Acker, as the Hawks topped the Fordham Rams, 72-47, at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in Philadelphia, Pa.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 0-17 overall, 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Hawks improved to 10-7 overall, 2-0 in the league.
Fordham's Megan Mahoney started off hot for the Rams, hitting her first three shots and leaving the score tied at six. The Hawks responded by scoring 13 of the next 16 points to take a 19-9 lead with 10:50 remaining in the half. Saint's Joseph's Sarah Acker and Timesha Gomez each scored four points over the next 3:12 to extend the Hawks' lead to 28-11 with 7:28 left. Annie Zopf then scored seven straight points for Fordham, putting the Saint Joseph's lead to 34-16 with 3:37 to go. The Rams ended the period with a three-point play by Mahoney, leaving Fordham behind 39-26 at the half.
At the half, Saint Joseph's shot 51.6% from the field (16-31), led by Sarah Acker's 12 points and five rebounds, while Annie Zopf led the charge for Fordham with 11 points.
The second half wasn't much kinder for the Rams, as Saint Joseph's extended their lead to as many as 27, 57-30, following a basket by Amy Wold with 10:56 remaining. The Rams shortened that lead to 20, 57-37, as Mahoney nailed a three-pointer with 7:26 to go, but that was as close as Fordham would get, falling by 25.
For Fordham, Megan Mahoney netted a game-high 23 points, while Annie Zopf posted 16 points, four assists, and four steals.
For Saint Joseph's, Sarah Acker recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Jenna Loschavio had 17 points off the bench.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, January 19th, as they host La Salle University at the Rose Hill Gym for an Atlantic 10 contest. The game will be the second game of a doubleheader, starting at approximately at 4:30 PM.
