Women's Basketball Snubbed In Double Overtime By Saint Louis

Bronx, N.Y. - In their first double overtime game since the end of the 2003-04 season, Fordham got career-high performances from Megan Mahoney and Annie Zopf, but the Rams could not overcome a 58-31 rebounding advantage by Saint Louis, as the Billikens defeated Fordham, 84-78, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads at the Rose Hill Gym.

With the loss, Fordham goes to 0-16 overall, while Saint Louis moves to 6-10.

Fordham got off to a great start in the first half, shooting over 54% from the field (13-24), while taking advantage of 13 Saint Louis turnovers. Fordham led 33-30 at the break, converting 17 points off of Saint Louis turnovers.

Saint Louis then scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 37-33 with 15:33 remaining. The Billikens extended that lead to as many as seven in the period, but Fordham rallied back to tie the game at 56 with 1:45 left in regulation. After a defensive stop, Kassie Humphries nailed a ten foot jumper to give Fordham a 58-56 lead with over a minute to go. After two free throws by each team made it 60-58 in favor of Fordham, Amy Klotz put home the game-tying lay-up for Saint Louis with nine seconds left. Beth Troutt did get a shot off in an attempt to win the game for Fordham, but came up short, forcing overtime.

In overtime, the teams went basket for basket with the game tied at 66 with 2:12 left. Fordham then regained a two-point edge as Takita Earl hit two free throws with 1:42 to go. Saint Louis' Theresa Lisch then drove the lane for a basket to knot the game, but Humphries again hit a short jump in the lane to regain the lead for Fordham. Klotz though once again got a put back lay-up to tie the game for the tenth time, and force a second overtime.

With the score tied at 78 in the second overtime, Amanda Kemezys hit a short jumper in the lane to give Saint Louis a two-point lead with 2:09 to go. The game stayed at 80-78 until Kemezys hit another jumper in the paint to extend the lead to four. Fordham was unable to score over the final 28 seconds, eventually falling by six.

Saint Louis finished the game with a 58-31 rebounding advantage, while out scoring Fordham, 62-32, in the paint.

For Fordham, Megan Mahoney scored a career-high 30 points on 13-of-26 shooting to go with three assists, while Annie Zopf also went for a career-highs with 20 points and seven assists in 48 minutes of play. Kassie Humphries added eight points, while Kristina Bell had six points and six boards.

For Saint Louis, Amy Klotz recorded career-highs with 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Amanda Kemezys had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Theresa Lisch added 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists with Katie Paganelli having 12 points.

The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, January 16th, as they play at Atlantic 10 opponent Saint Joseph's University at 7:00 PM.
