Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play With Tie Against Richmond

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's soccer team continued to have no luck scoring, opening Atlantic 10 play against Richmond on Friday night with a scoreless tie on Jack Coffey Field.

With the tie, Fordham is 3-3-2 overall, while Richmond goes to 1-6-2.

After a scoreless first half, the Rams had a good chance to break the scoreless tie in the 62nd minute as Alexis Ribadeneyra raced past two defenders and onto a long pass, getting off a one-timer over the on rushing keeper but hit the right post.

Richmond also had a chance to break the deadlock in the 78th minute as Melanie Vargas got off a blast from 20 yards that banged off the cross bar and back into play.

In the final minute of regulation, Katie Sanchez almost sent the fans home happy as she collected a loose ball at the top of the box and got off a shot that a Richmond defender managed to get a foot on and deflect away.

Sanchez also almost ended the game in the second overtime, heading a Ribadeneyra corner kick over the cross bar in the 104th minute.

In net, Fordham's Jen Byer made four saves for her third shutout of the season, while Kate Hudson had one save in the shutout for Richmond.

The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 30th, as they play at Charlotte, beginning at 1:00 PM.
