Bronx, N.Y. -
It's said that the cross bar can be a keeper's best friend. Such was the case for Army keeper Alex Lostetter tonight as Fordham repeatedly hit the cross bar with potential tie-breaking goals before Army's Pia White scored what proved to be the game-winner, her second goal of the game, in the 84th minute to lead the Black Knights to a 2-1 women's soccer win over the Rams on Jack Coffey Field. With the win, Army evens its record at 4-4-1 on the year while Fordham falls to 3-3-1.
On the game-winner, Jenna Roberts broke in alone on Fordham keeper Jen Byer, who was able to make a sliding save of Robert's shot. But the rebound came to a wide open White who one-timed it from just outside the box to the back of the net for her team-leading third goal of the year.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Lostetter saved a Corey Cerrato shot with the rebound coming to Erica Frizzell, who got off a shot on the ground that beat Lostetter to the far post with her second goal of the year.
Lauren Bustos had two scoring chances in the final four minutes of the half for Fordham. The first came in the 42nd minute when she broke in on the left side and got off a shot from ten yards that Lostetter made a diving save on and the second came as the clock expired when she headed a ball towards the net, which was saved by Lostetter.
Army picked up the tying goal in the 58th minute as Jenna Roberts fed White on the right and she beat Byer on the ground to the far post from eight yards.
The Rams then put the pressure on Lostetter, with Alexis Ribadeneyra picking up a bouncing ball and getting of a blast from 15 yards that went just high in the 65th minute.
Four minutes later, Cerrato sent a cross into the box for Fordham that Katie McDermott shot towards goal with the ball bouncing in front of the goal and then up and off the cross bar and out.
In the 79th minute, Courtney Fedge took a centering pass and one-timed a blast that hit another cross bar, foiling the Rams' attempt at a game-winning tally.
Byer made three saves in the Fordham net while Lostetter finished with two saves for the Black Knights as the Rams outs shot Army 12-6 on the night.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday night, September 28th, as they host the University of Richmond Spiders in their Atlantic 10 opener on Jack Coffey Field at 7:00 PM.
