Volleyball Wins A-10 Opener Versus George Washington

Bronx, N.Y. - After a disappointing match against a nationally ranked opponent on Tuesday, the Fordham volleyball team was looking for a better performance in their Atlantic 10 conference opener against George Washington on Friday. The Rams (8-10, 1-0 A10) then responded with a 3-1 win over the Colonials (7-8, 0-1 A10) led by Lauren Fitzsimon's career-high 13 kills and Christi Griffiths' first career double-double.

Final game scores were 27-30, 30-25, 30-19, and 30-21.

The match opened with George Washington hitting extremely well, as they hit .415 in game one en route to a three-point win. Fordham then began to impose their will over the final three games, improving their hitting each game, capped by a .316 percentage in the clinching game.

For the match, Fordham had five players record at least eight kills in the match, led by Christi Griffiths' first career double-double with 19 kills and 10 blocks. Lauren Fitzsimon recorded a career-high 13 kills to go with eight digs and four blocks, while Jolanda Gunning-Snowden chipped in 11 kills. Jenna Hart notched nine kills and eight digs, with Katherine Burrell dishing out 52 assists to go with 16 digs and five kills.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, September 22nd, as they host Atlantic 10 opponent Charlotte at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
