Bronx, N.Y. - Heading into today's Fordham-Seton Hall women's soccer match, most in attendance were not expecting a ton of offense, as Fordham had given up four goals in their first four games, while Seton Hall allowed just one tally in their first five games. In such a defensive match-up, whoever scored first and early would be set up nicely for the rest of the contest.
Fortunately for Fordham, senior Erica Frizzell knocked in a goal in the 21st minute of the first half, which happened to be the only goal of the match, as Fordham shut out the Seton Hall Pirates, 1-0, on Jack Coffey Field.
On Frizzell's goal, sophomore Lauren Bustos did most of the work, carrying the ball for about 50 yards down the left sideline, while fighting off two Seton Hall defenders. Bustos then crossed the ball past Seton Hall goalkeeper Amanda Becker, which Frizzell deflected at the top of the box, just enough to roll into the right side of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Frizzell.
Fordham almost made it a two-goal lead in the second half as freshman Michelle Ancelj got the ball in the box with a wide open net and couldn't pull the trigger, allowing the Seton Hall defense to eventually force a high shot over the net.
The Fordham defense then did their job, holding Seton Hall to six shots in the match, with Jen Byer making three saves for her second shutout of the season.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 22nd, as they play at Hofstra, beginning at 5:30 PM.
