Bronx, N.Y. - After two soccer exhibition games with no goals, Fordham senior Dean Stanic (Johannesbuerg, South Africa) made sure that wouldn't happen in the Rams' season opener against Marist on Friday night. Stanic netted his first hat trick at Fordham, scoring three times, as the Rams defeated Marist, 3-1, on Jack Coffey Field.
The hat trick was the first by a Fordham men's soccer player since Brian Borrhello scored three goals against Saint Joseph's on October 6, 2002.
With the first half coming to a close, Stanic took a bending blast from 20 yards out to the top left corner, giving Fordham the 1-0 lead with 18 seconds left in the half.
Marist then tied the game in the second half in the 61st minute, as Shareif Ali took a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off a Fordham defender and past goalkeeper Justin Burse (Louisville, Ky.).
Fordham regained their lead in the 77th minute, as Einar Oddsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) deflected a ball off his head backwards, where Stanic picked up the ball and scored on a one-timer from 15 yards out.
Stanic then sealed the game in the 81st minute, picking up a loose ball and scoring on a blast from 18 yards out.
In net, Burse got the win for Fordham, recording four saves in the game, while Marist's Marcio del Rio had five saves. Fordham out shot Marist, 13-9, in the game.
The Fordham Men's Soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 2nd, as they play host to Loyola (Md.) at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
