Volleyball Tops Iona, 3-1

New Rochelle, N.Y. - Fordham's Christi Griffiths recorded a season-high 18 kills to go with four blocks, while Kailee May had season-highs of 16 kills and 21 digs, as the Fordham Rams topped the Iona Gaels, 3-1, in volleyball action in New Rochelle, N.Y.

With the win, Fordham improves to 3-2 overall, while Iona drops to 0-3.

In game one, Fordham controlled from the start, opening a 16-6 lead over Iona. Fordham held that led throughout, taking the game, 30-23. The Rams hit .304 in that first game, led by Christi Griffiths' eight kills, while Katherine Burrell dished out 16 assists and four digs.

Fordham again got off to a good start in game two, going up 16-9, over the Gaels. Iona though fought back to tie the game at 20. After Fordham regained the lead, Iona pushed right back, getting game point, 29-28. Fordham fought off a number of game points, but finally relented to Iona, 35-33, as the Rams made seven service errors and hit just .059 in the game.

The Rams then clicked on all cylinders in game three, winning it, 30-11. With the Rams up 11-4, Emilie Stewart's serve took over, getting Fordham eight straight points, making it, 19-4. Fordham hit a whopping .487 (22-3-39), as Jenna Hart and Kailee May each had five kills, with Stewart adding four kills and three aces.

In game four, Fordham opened the game with a 13-7 lead, before Iona closed the gap to 17-13. The Rams then closed the game with a 13-3 run to win game four, 30-16, and the match three games to one. The Rams hit .409 in game four with May and Jolanda Gunning-Snowden each having five kills.

Besides Griffiths and May, Emilie Stewart notched 12 kills, 12 digs, five assists, and four aces, with Katherine Burrell dishing out a career-high 58 assists to go with seven kills and 11 digs. Jenna Hart had 11 kills in her first action of the fall with Jolanda Gunning-Snowden adding 12 kills. Defensively, Stephanie Frost had a season-high 23 digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, September 1st, as they play two matches as a part of the Western New York Invitational. They will meet Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 10:00 AM and Canisius at 7:00 PM.
