Atlanta, Ga. - Fordham's Emilie Stewart and Katherine Burrell each recorded their first career double-double, while Christi Griffiths added 10 kills and seven blocks, as the Rams opened their 2007 season with a 3-1 win over Central Florida at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
The Rams opened the match by winning game one, 30-26, as Fordham held Central Florida to an -.051 hitting percentage. With the game tied at 21, Fordham went on a 6-1 run, capped by a kill by Jolanda Gunning-Snowden, to lead 27-22, a lead they would not relinquish. Christi Griffiths turned out to be a force in game one, posting three kills and four blocks, while Emilie Stewart had four kills.
After Central Florida knotted the match at a game apiece with a 30-27 win in game two, UCF grabbed a 19-9 lead in game three. The Rams though would not go away, as they came back from ten points down to win game three, 31-29.
The Rams then sailed to a 30-24 win in game four to take the match.
Fordham totaled ten blocks in the match, holding Central Florida to an overall hitting percentage of .060.
Emilie Stewart led the offense for Fordham, recording her first career double-double with career-highs of 17 kills and 11 digs. Katherine Burrell also recorded her first ever double-double with a career-high 40 assists to go with 10 digs. Besides Griffiths debut, Kailee May added nine kills and seven digs with Katie Wells having six kills in their Fordham debut.
The Rams have one more match on day one of the Georgia State Invtiational, taking on Chattanooga at 4:00 PM.
