The Fordham Holiday Tournament wrapped up this afternoon at the historic Rose Hill Gym, as Fairfield's Sabra Wrice scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Stags (10-3) to a 70-41 victory over Mt. St. Mary's (3-9) in the championship game, while in the consolation game, Troy's Kylie Morrissy scored a career-high 26 points to go with five assists to give the Trojans (7-6) a 78-70 win over host Fordham (0-13).
Troy 78, Fordham 70
In the first game of the day, a seesaw affair arose between Fordham and Troy in the consolation game. Troy put together an excellent first half, leading by double figures for most of the way. They led by as many as 16 in the period, and finished the period up 43-31. The Trojans shot 56.7% in the half, outscoring Fordham in the paint, 18-4.
In the second half, Fordham chipped away at the lead with a 10-2 run over the first 4:25 of the period. Fordham then pulled to within one, 48-47, after a basket by Takita Earl and two straight lay-ups by Megan Mahoney with 13:31 remaining. With the lead still at one, Fordham grabbed their first lead since the opening minutes, as Raina Spencer connected for a jumper to give Fordham a 51-50 lead. After a three-pointer by Troy's Amy Lewis, Annie Zopf and Kristina Bell made back-to-back baskets to put Fordham ahead two, 55-53. The game then got taken over by Troy's Kylie Morrissy, as she scored 14 straight points for Troy to give them an eight-point lead, 67-59. Fordham tried to make a final push, cutting the lead to four on a three-pointer by Beth Troutt, but couldn't get any closer.
For Fordham, Megan Mahoney scored a season-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while Annie Zopf netted 16 points and five rebounds. Raina Spencer also chipped in 14 points and two steals. Besides Morrissy, Amy Lewis scored 20 points and seven rebounds for Troy, while Audrey Muse had 16 points and nine rebounds.
Fairfield 70, Mt. St. Mary's 41
In the championship game, the game turned at the start of the second half. After a Tiffany Green basket before the first half buzzer put Mt. St. Mary's behind 31-25 at the break, the Mountaineers were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the second half. In that time, Fairfield scored 23 points to put the game far out of reach of the Mountaineers, and win the Fordham Holiday Tournament.
For Fairfield, Sabra Wrice scored 22 points to go with six rebounds and three steals, while Baendu Lowenthal registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. For Mt. St. Mary's, Lauren Howell led the way with 12 points, while Tiffany Green had 11 points.
