The Fordham Holiday Tournament got underway today at the historic Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, as Fordham hosted their first regular season women's basketball tournament in almost 20 years. In the opening game, Mt. St. Mary's Lauren Howell scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Mountaineers (3-8) to a 56-43 win over host Fordham (0-12), while in the nightcap, Fairfield's Sabra Wrice scored 16 points to lead the Stags (9-3) to a 55-48 win over Troy.
With the wins, Fairfield will play Mt. St. Mary's in the championship game at approximately 3:00 PM on Sunday, while Fordham will meet Troy in the consolation game at 1:00 PM.
Mt. St. Mary's 56, Fordham 43
Fordham's Megan Mahoney led the Fordham charge early on as she netted the first nine points for the Rams, as they took a 9-6 lead. The Mountaineers then outscored the Rams 19-5 over a ten minute stretch, led by 11 points from Lauren Howell, as they grabbed a 25-14 lead with 3:35 remaining in the first half. They extended that lead to 15 at the half, 37-22, as Tiffany Green hit a buzzer beater three-pointer to close out the frame.
Fordham knocked the lead back to seven, as the Rams scored the first eight points of the period, highlighted by a three-pointer by Kyara Weekes. The Mountaineers would hold off Fordham off the rest of the period as their lead never dipped below seven, while holding the Rams in check on the boards with a 49-36 edge.
For Fordham, Megan Mahoney scored a team-high 17 points to go with four steals, while Kyara Weekes had eight points. Lauren Howell led the Mountaineers with 18 points, while Tiffany Green reached the 1,000 career points on the day with 16 points and five steals.
Fairfield 55, Troy 46
Troy led throughout the first half, leading by as many as 10 points, and taking a 31-26 lead into halftime. The Trojans shot 45.8% from the field in the period, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, while Fairfield managed just two three-pointers and a 31.4% shooting percentage in the period.
Fairfield netted the first three baskets of the second half to grab a one-point which held until the 13:29 mark of the second half. The Stags then reeled off eight straight points to take a 46-37 lead with 6:32 remaining. Troy cut the lead back to five, 53-48, with 2:26 to go, but the Stags held the Trojans scoreless for the rest of the contest to win the game, 55-48.
For Fairfield, three Stags finished in double figures, led by Sabra Wrice with 16 points and five rebounds. Stephanie Geehan had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Baendu Lowenthal netted 13 points and nine boards. Troy was led by Audrey Muse, who scored 17 points and nine rebounds with Amy Lewis chipping in 11 points.
