The Fordham University men's soccer squad entered today's game at Massachusetts in a three-way tie with the Minutemen and Saint Joseph's for fourth in the Atlantic 10 standings. Unfortunately, the Rams could not improve on the fourth place standing as they fell to Massachusetts, 1-0, on Rudd Field.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 5-8-3 overall, 4-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts improves to 10-6 overall, 5-2 in the conference.
UMass applied pressure to Fordham in the first half, outshooting the Rams 6-2, but could not convert any early chances.
In the second half, both teams had scoring chances with Massachusetts finishing the half with 12 shots to nine for Fordham.
The Minutemen scored the lone goal off a corner kick in the 50th minute. Doug Rappaport took the corner with Chris Brown heading the ball across the goal box from the near post to the back post where Mike DeSantis jumped up to get his foot on the ball.
Fordham pressured the Minutemen defense seeking an equalizer, but the Minutemen stood tall. Zack Simmons made all four of his saves in the second frame for his sixth career shutout. Dan Hajducky recorded seven saves in the Fordham net.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday, November 9th as they travel to George Washington University for an Atlantic 10 match at 1:00 PM.
