Women's Basketball Falls To Providence, 63-45

Bronx, N.Y. - Behind a career-high performance from Shantee Darrian, who scored 26 points, 16 rebounds, and four blocks, the Providence Friars topped the Fordham Rams, 63-45, at the Rose Hill Gym on Wednesday night.

Providence kept Fordham out of the win column, as they established the inside game, scoring 28 points in the paint, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds and blocking 11 shots, as they improved to 5-2 on the season.

The Friars quickly jetted out to a 12-point lead, 17-5, as Shantee Darrian scored nine of those points for Providence. Fordham then put together a 13-2 push to close to within one, 19-18, with 4:18 left in the first half. Takita Earl keyed the run with five points, while Annie Zopf and Megan Mahoney both connected on a three-pointer. Providence's Mi-Khida Hankins responded with a pair of baskets, while Brittany Dorsey made a three-pointer, extending the lead back to eight, 26-18. Fordham closed that lead to six, 26-20, as Kyara Weekes beat the buzzer, scoring on a drive to the basket.

Fordham closed to gap to four, 28-24, on another hoop by Earl, but Kendria Holmes hit a three-pointer, followed by a Darrian basket to put Providence's lead at 33-24. Fordham stayed within seven points, 39-32,as Zopf connected for four free throws, with 11:51 remaining. The Friars then pulled away from the Rams with an 11-0 run highlighted by a three-point play by Darrian and another three-pointer from Holmes, as Providence went on to win by 18.

For Fordham, Megan Mahoney netted team-highs with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Kyara Weekes added 11 points off the bench. Takita Earl had seven points and six boards, while Annie Zopf recorded eight points and three assists.

Besides Darrian, Kendria Holmes also scored in double figures with 13 points to go with five assists and three steals.

The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, December 1st, as they host Iona College at the Rose Hill Gym, beginning at 1:00 PM. During the game, Fordham will honor the 30th anniversary of the 1977-78 Eastern Regional Championship team.
