Pittsburgh, Pa. -
With only one game remaining on the schedule, today's Fordham-Duquesne Atlantic 10 women's soccer match was huge, pitting the third place Dukes against the fifth place Rams. With a win, Fordham would secure a playoff berth, and keep their hopes alive for a first round bye at next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Ninety minutes would not be enough in this contest, as Fordham got a late goal in regulation from Brittany Hogan, which was followed by a quick goal in overtime by Michelle Ancelj, as Fordham stunned Duquesne, 2-1, in Pittsburgh, Pa. With the win, Fordham improved to 9-4-4 on the year, 6-1-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne falls to 10-6-0 overall, 7-3-0 in the league.
Fordham has now assured themselves a spot at next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament, hosted by Charlotte. The Rams are currently in a tie for third place with 21 points, behind Charlotte's 25 and Saint Louis' 23.
Following a scoreless first half, Duquesne found the back of the net first in the 55th minute, as Shana Geisler scored her fifth goal of the season, off an assist from Audra Mathews.
The game stayed that way until the 86th minute, where Fordham was awarded a corner kick. With every player crashing the net, Alexis Ribadeneyra put the ball in play, and Fordham's Brittany Hogan was able to poke a shot through a number of players, scoring her first goal of the season to tie the game.
Following the conclusion of regulation, Fordham concluded their comback, just 2:32 into overtime. Courtney Fedge hit a cross from the right side to the far post, which Michelle Ancelj put home with a diving header for the game-winning goal. It was Ancelj's third goal of the season.
In net, Elisabeth Roald made four saves for Fordham in the victory, as she improved to 3-1-2 on the year, while Gabby Morrin made five saves for Duquesne.
The Fordham women's soccer team still has a chance at a first round bye at the Atlantic 10 Tournament, as they could finish second. The Rams need a loss by Saint Louis to Charlotte on Saturday, and then a victory over St. Bonaventure in their season finale on Sunday. The Fordham-St. Bonaventure game is set for 1:00 PM.
