Women's Basketball Hangs Tough With Marist

Bronx, N.Y. - Playing against a Sweet Sixteen team from a year ago, the Fordham Rams knew they were in for a stiff test on Wednesday night. Hanging around for most of the game within ten points, Fordham's turnovers finally caught up to them, as the Rams fell to the Marist Red Foxes, 75-55, at the Rose Hill Gym.

Both team struggled from the field early on, as the score was tied at six, 8:30 into the contest. Marist eventually pulled out to a five-point lead, but Fordham responded with a three-pointer by Annie Zopf and a jumper by Kassie Humphries to knot the game at 13. The Red Foxes then regained the lead with a 13-2 run over a six-minute span to lead 28-15, as Meg Dahlman and Rachele Fitz combined for all 13 points in that stretch. Fordham's Takita Earl nailed a late jumper, leaving Fordham behind 28-17 at the half.

The game could have been much closer at the break, as Fordham committed 19 turnovers in the first half, which turned into 14 Marist points. Marist's Rachele Fitz led all scorers in the half with 11 points and four rebounds, while Fordham was led by Kassie Humphries with six points, and Takita Earl with four points and five rebounds.

In the second half, Fordham made a push at the start of the period, closing to within seven points, 32-25, on a three-pointer from Megan Mahoney with 17:11 left in the game. Marist quickly responded with nine straight points, included two three-pointers from Erica Allenspach and Dahlman to lead by 16, 41-25. Marist did not let their lead slip away, as they led by as many as 26 in the second half, eventually taking a 20-point win.

For Fordham, Megan Mahoney scored a team-high 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half, to go with four rebounds and three steals, while Annie Zopf scored 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. Raina Spencer also chipped in eight points off the bench for the Rams.

For Marist, Meg Dahlman scored a game-high 19 points to go with seven boards, while Rachele Fitz had 17 points and five boards.

The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, November 17th, as they host Lehigh University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
