In a pivotal match-up between two teams fighting for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Rhode Island's Kayla Newberg recorded 20 kills and six blocks, while Lauren McIntosh added 15 kills and four blocks, as Rhode Island topped Fordham in five games at the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday afternoon. Final game scores were 30-25, 27-30, 18-30, 30-26, and 15-11.
With the loss, Fordham moves to 11-17 overall, 3-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island goes to 12-12 on the year, 4-5 in the league. Fordham is now a game back of Rhode Island and George Washington for an Atlantic 10 playoff berth with four conference games remaining.
The difference in the match was the service game, as Rhode Island recorded 13 service aces to Fordham's five. Rhode Island also posted an advantage in team blocks by an 11-6 count.
For Fordham, Christi Griffiths posted a season-high 23 kills to go with three blocks, while Kailee May had a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs. Katherine Burrell came up just short of a triple-double with 54 assists, 13 digs, seven kills and two service aces, while Sara Friede had a season-high 17 digs to go with five kills and three assists.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Tuesday, October 30th, as they host Columbia University, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
