Bronx, N.Y. -
The Atlantic 10 men's soccer match tonight featured two equal teams. Both Fordham and St. Bonaventure entered the game with a 2-1 conference record and in the final stats each team tallied four shots and four corner kicks. But as in most games, the only thing that really matters is the score, and Dean Stanic made sure that number leaned in Fordham's favor as the senior forward scored the game's only goal to lead the Rams to a 1-0 win over the Bonnies on a rain-soaked on Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham improves to 4-6-3 overall, 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure falls to 5-5-1, 2-2 in the conference.
The Rams had the first good scoring opportunity as Kevin Meyer took a free kick in the 13th minute, placing the ball inside the box and on the head of John Pardini, but Pardini's shot was saved by Bonnies keeper David Flynn.
In the 17th minute, Einar Oddsson lined up for a direct kick 35 yards out from goal and blasted a shot that Flynn was able to deflect away from the goal.
Fordham also had a scoring chance just before the half but Flynn was able to stop a Stanic shot with four minutes remaining in the half.
Stanic scored what proved to the game's lone goal in the 60th minute, taking a cross from Meyer and one-timing a shot on the ground that beat Flynn from 15 yards for his fourth goal of the year. The four goals ties Stanic with Meyer for the team lead.
After the goal, the Rams played defensively as St. Bonaventure pressed for the equalizer, with the Bonnies' best chance coming with seven minutes left when Samuel Maheu got off a shot from 20 yards that hit the near post and bounced away.
Dan Hajducky made two saves in the Fordham net to record his second straight shutout, and fourth of the year, while Flynn finished with three saves in the St. Bonaventure net.
The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, October 28th, as they host the Duquesne University Dukes in the second game of an Atlantic 10 soccer doubleheader on Jack Coffey Field at 2:30 PM. The Fordham women will host Dayton in the first game of the day at noon.
