Amherst, Mass. - After posting three straight home wins in Atlantic 10 play, the Fordham women's soccer team took to the road up to Amherst, Massachusetts. They found the road isn't so friendly, falling 1-0 to the University of Massachusetts on Friday afternoon. With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-4-3 overall, 3-1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts improves to 8-3-1 overall, 3-3 in the conference.
Massachusetts had a chance for a goal early in the game when Vanessa Patry got off a shot in the third minute that Fordham keeper Jen Byers was able to keep out of the net.
Later in the half, Cristina Adams took a header from Britt Canfield and beat Byers to the far left post in the 28th minute for her third goal of the season.
Fordham controlled play in the second half, coming up with multiple scoring chances.
In the 63rd minute, UMass keeper Kristin Walker collided with a Fordham player and had to leave the game with an injury. Sophomore Lauren Lucky came in the rest of the way.
The Rams had a solid chance for a game-tying goal in the 82nd minute when Brittany Hogan appeared to have a clear shot to the goal, but the UMass defense came up strong to knock the ball away and force a corner kick.
Fordham out shot Massachusetts 17-14 on the day, while also taking 13 corner kicks to three for the Minutewomen.
Walker made three saves in goal for Massachusetts to pick up the victory while Lucky chipped in with four to seal the win. Byer finished with ten saves for the Rams.
The Fordham women's soccer squad will next be in action on Sunday, October 21st, as they travel to Kingston, R.I., to face the University of Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 match at 1:00 PM.
