FORDHAM TO BATTLE NORTHEASTERN IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA I-AA PLAYOFFS ON SATURDAY

(Nov. 24, 2002) ?C The Fordham University football Rams will travel to Boston, Massachusetts to face the Northeastern University Huskies in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs on Saturday, November 30th at 12:30 p.m. This is the first ever appearance for the Rams in the I-AA playoffs. Fordham made one appearance in the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 1987 when the Rams defeated Hofstra in the first round (41-6), and fell to Wagner in the second (21-0). Fordham received the NCAA bid by virtue of its first ever Patriot League championship. The Rams finished with a 6-1 conference record, tying them with Colgate for the title. The Rams received the automatic bid due to their 40-31 win over Colgate on September 14th. Fordham, led by head coach Dave Clawson, finished the regular season with a 9-2 overall record, 6-1 in the Patriot League. The nine wins are the most for a Fordham team on the I-AA level and the six Patriot League wins is also a team-high. The Rams are led by junior quarterback Kevin Eakin, who has completed 203 of 316 passes for 2,656 yards and 21 touchdowns. Junior running back Kirwin Watson leads the league in rushing, averaging 119.3 yards/game, third best in the NCAA I-AA. He set the Fordham single-season rushing record this year with 1,312 yards. Junior wide receiver Javarus Dudley, who leads the league in receptions per game (6.27) and receiving yards/game (95.6), also set the school career receiving yardage record this year with 2,699 career receiving yards. The day will be a Fordham-Northeastern doubleheader as the Rams and the Huskies will also face off in men??s basketball following the football game. The basketball game time is set for 6:00 p.m. on Northeastern??s Solomon Court.
