Newport News, Va. - Just a day before the start of the Atlantic 10 Championship, the conference released its All-Conference women's soccer teams and major award winners on Wednesday, as voted upon by the league's coaches. Four Rams heard their names called in the release, including a pair of First Team selection.
Fordham was led by seniors
Nicole Bates (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and
Ally Doyle (Fairfield, Conn.), who were named First Team All-Atlantic 10, while
Brooke Salmon (West Hempstead, N.Y.) was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10.
Margaret Roughley (New Providence, N.J.) was selected to the conference's All-Rookie Team, as well as Bates earning All-Academic Team honors in a vote of the conference's sports information directors.
Nicole Bates
Bates and Doyle, who were both Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection, anchored the Rams' defense to a 0.89 goals against average and eight shutouts this season, which both rank as the third-best single season totals in school history. The Rams allowed one goal or less in 15 of 19 games this season. Offensively, Bates netted a career-high three goals, including two game winners, while Doyle had a career-best three points, on a goal and an assist. This is the third time that Fordham had has two First Team selections (2008 – Lauren Bustos, Kim Boulos; 2009 – Bustos, Katie McDermott).
Ally Doyle
Academically, Bates, who was named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection last week, holds a 3.92 GPA, majoring in Applied Accounting & Finance and is a three-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Salmon, an All-Rookie Team selection last year, started all 19 games this season and finished as the Rams' leading scorer. Overall, she netted a personal-best five goals, two of which were game-winning goals, to go with four assists for a career-high 14 points. In conference action, she had three goals and two assists, which included the game-winning goal at Davidson this past Wednesday.
Brooke Salmon
Roughley is the 11
th Ram to earn All-Rookie Team honors, since joining the Atlantic 10. She appeared in all 19 games for Fordham, starting the final 15 games of the season. She registered three goals and three assists for nine points, which rated her third on the team in goals and points.
The quartet of Rams will look for some more hardware, starting Thursday, as the Rams open the Atlantic 10 Championship against the #4 seed George Mason Patriots at 8:00 PM in Kingston, R.I. The first two rounds of the championship can be seen on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network, free of charge, while the championship game will be televised live on the American Sports Network.
