Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University men's tennis team held their end-of-year team banquet
on Saturday afternoon at Michaelangelo's Little Italy where they handed out team awards and celebrated the season.
The team finished with a 14-7 overall record, their third consecutive winning season.
"I always enjoy getting together with the team to celebrate the season," said head coach
Mike Sowter. "The team has really worked hard and shown a lot of improving this year so it's been a pleasure watching the team grow. This is such a close-knit group and it's always fun when they're together so we had a wonderful luncheon together. We got to recognize the winners of our team awards and celebrate the accomplishments of the team both on and off the court."
The Spirit Award, which is given to the student-athlete that demonstrates sportsmanship, leadership, motivation and integrity, was awarded to sophomore
Fabian Hansch Mauritzson. The team co-captain was consistently was one of the most determined members of the team each and every practice and set a positive tone all season. He compiled 10 singles victories as well as a team high 15 doubles wins.
Freshman
Alex Makatsaria received the team's Most Improved Player award. Makatsaria battled to improve throughout the fall to secure a position in the starting lineup and finished with 11 singles wins on the season.
The Player of the Year Award was presented to sophomore
Finn Kemper. During his first season with the Rams, he played predominantly at the No. 4 and 5 position, ending the year with a team high singles record of 16-7 and a doubles record of 12-10. He was also undefeated in singles in all A-10 Conference matches.
Additionally,
Max Green was named the men's tennis team MVP at the Block F Dinner on May 2nd, in addition to being named Second Team All-Atlantic 10.
