Rowing Opens Spring Season at Murphy Cup Regatta

Varsity 8 places fifth in grand final

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Fordham Women's Rowing Team kicked off their season with a strong showing in the Murphy Cup Regatta held on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, March 31st. 
 
The Varsity 8+ crew had the standout performance of the day by placing second in their heat with a time of 6:54.97, less than two seconds behind Temple.  The Varsity 8+ advanced to the grand final where they faced windy conditions and a disadvantageous lane assignment to finish in fifth place with a time of 7:34.23.

The JV 8+ and Novice 8+ crews also raced exceptionally well.  The JV 8+ finished third in their heat with a time of 7:03.42 and advanced to the petite final.  In the petite final they challenged Wesleyan down the length of the course and crossed the finish line just five seconds behind to earn second place with a time of  7:49.21.  The Novice 8+ placed second in their heat with a time of 7:42.60 and went on to compete in the final.  They had another strong row in the final where they finished in third place behind Army and Delaware to earn a bronze medal with a time of 8:35.96.

Nov 8+ (Cox: Oliva Ciraulo, 8 Debra Chieco, 7 Emma Spoldi, 6 Kylie Elwood, 5 Gabriella Guglielmi, 4 Danielle Moynihan, 3 Lidya Ozcelik, 2 Stephanie Peralta, 1 Elizabeth Berejka)
 
The women also competed in the Third Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events in which rowers faced a challenging schedule to double in both races.  The Varsity 4+ finished fourth in their heat, well in front of Loyola with a time of 8:21.78 which did not qualify them for the final.  After a quick turnaround the Third Varsity 8+ took to the water where they rowed their heat in 7:56.05 for a fourth place finish.

The team will compete again this next Sunday, April 8th, in the Cooper Invitational Regatta in Pennsauken, N.J.
