Sixth Annual Awards Banquet Held Sunday Evening

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's basketball team celebrated its 2017-18 campaign on Sunday evening during the program's sixth annual awards banquet, handing out several awards and honoring outgoing senior G'mrice Davis.

Head coach Stephanie Gaitley and her staff handed out seven awards on the night, three of which were voted on by the players and four as a result of performance in practice, through academic achievement, and accumulation of community service time.

The first award of the evening was the Ram 24 award, which was given to junior Mary Goulding for a second straight year. Goulding voluntarily takes time out of her weekly schedule to take part in local community service.

The next two awards were for the season-long Chaney Chart competition. The Chaney Chart comes from Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and former Temple head coach, John Chaney. He was a hard-nosed, tough coach who always demanded excellence on and off the court from his players.  The Chaney Chart is something that Coach Chaney created to keep his players accountable in practice and focused on measuring the little things. This year, both the overall and defensive Chaney Chart awards went to redshirt freshman Bre Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh was also named the team's Most Improved Player.

The Teammate award was a tie for the first time, shared by Goulding and Lauren Holden, as voted on by their teammates for being exceptional teammates and leaders, serving as a team captains this year and leading by example, and always encouraging their teammates, both on and off the court. Freshman Zara Jillings, who was not in attendance after competing in and helping her native New Zealand earn bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, was honored with the Highest GPA award. The team as a whole earned a 3.53 GPA in the fall.

Freshman Vilisi Tavui was named Most Inspirational, as voted on by her teammates, for battling back from a lengthy injury and for competing in practice all season long while she sits out this year.

Prior to the awards, the women's basketball staff took turns honoring the players one by one and others in attendance that have had a hand in helping the program this year.

Coach Gaitley was honored with a commemorative ball and framed signed photo for her 600th career victory before the team played a montage of moments from the year, starting with the program's trip to Italy and Spain in late August and ending with the team's run to the Sweet 16 in the WNIT.

As rising seniors, Goulding and Holden addressed and thanked the crowd on hand to end the night.
