Kingston, R.I. – The Fordham men's track and field team currently stands in third place after day one of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship, which is being held at Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse.
Fordham got off to a good start on day one of competition as the Rams posted one event win and qualified three runners for Sunday's finals.
With five events completed Rhode Island leads the team competition with 62 points, followed by George Mason (34), Fordham (20), Saint Louis (18), UMass (17), La Salle (12), VCU (11), George Washington (10), Davidson (6), Saint Joseph's (5).
Leading the way for the Rams was
Ryan Kutch who won an extremely close race in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 14.49.01, finishing just .005 seconds ahead of Saint Louis' Manuel de Backer.
Thomas Slattery also scored for the Rams, finishing third in a time of 14:58.11.
Louis Santelli won his heat in the 800 meter run in a time of 1:54.09. Also qualifying for Sunday's finals were
Sean Phillips (2
nd – 2:29.77) in the 1,000 meter run and
Antony Misko (5
th – 1:05.86) in the 500 meter run.
Other individual performers on Saturday included Arthur Gooden (13
th – 1:07.29) in the 500 meter dash,
Kyle Mack (11
th – 50.95) and
Jack Keegan (15
th - 51.91) in the 400 meter dash,
Byrne Cronin (13
th – 2:01.35) and
Michael Campbell (15
th – 2:09.43) in the 800 meter run,
Patrick Dineen (9
th – 2:33.07) in the 1,000 meter run and
Kyle Mack (18
th – 23.49) in the 200 meter dash.
In the field events,
Ryan Riviere finished seventh in the pole vault, clearing 4.50m and
Nikolas Reardon took eighth in the long jump with a jump of 6.42m.
Andrew Byrne currently sits in eighth place in the heptathlon after four events with a score of 2,307 points.
The final event of the day was the distance medley relay where the Rams finished seventh in a time of 10:17.06.
