Men’s Swimming & Diving Finishes Eighth at A-10 Championship

Joseph Vizza Earns Bronze in the 100 Freestyle, while Three School Records Fall

Geneva, Ohio – (February 17, 2018) – The 2018 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship came to an end at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, on Saturday.  In the men's championship, George Washington repeated as the conference champion, scoring 689 points.
 
George Mason was second with 541 points, followed by La Salle (431), Massachusetts (411), Saint Louis (408), Davidson (350.5), St. Bonaventure (343.5), and Fordham (331).
 
The final night of finals kicked off with the 1650 freestyle, as freshman Danny McGowan placed eighth in 16:03.97.
 
Next up was the 200 backstroke where freshman Auston Ramsay set a new school record by placing fifth overall in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:46.02.  He broke the previous mark of 1:47.87, set by Miguel Mattox last year.
 
In the 100 freestyle, Fordham had a pair of finalists, as Joseph Vizza earned bronze with a time of 44.53 seconds, while Joe Mercurio was fourth in 44.55 seconds.

Then in the 200 breaststroke, another school record fell as Travis Monahan won the "B" final for ninth overall in a record time of 2:01.02.  He broke the mark of 2:02.10, set last year by teammate Sean Finlay.  This year, Finlay scored 12th in 2:04.28.
 
Then in the final individual event, Tommy Christensen was the lone scorer for Fordham in the 200 butterfly, placing 14th in 1:52.55.
 
The final event of the championship was the 400 freestyle relay, where Fordham's team of Vizza, Kevin Berry, Monahan, and Mercurio placed fourth in a school record time of 2:59.25, breaking the previous mark of 3:00.98 from last year.
