Geneva, Ohio – (February 15, 2018) – Day two of the Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship is in the books at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Through the first two days of action, Fordham is eighth out of eight teams, as George Washington remains atop the leaderboard with 249 points, followed by La Salle (191), George Mason (180.5), Massachusetts (175), Davidson (145.5), St. Bonaventure (136), Saint Louis (130), and Fordham (121).
The first men's event was the 500 freestyle, which saw Fordham miss out on scoring. The Rams' top finisher was freshman
Danny McGowan in 27
th overall in 4:38.86.
In the 200 individual medley,
Isiah Magsino found the scoring column for the Rams, as he took 14
th overall in a season-best time of 1:51.74.
Joe Mercurio
The Rams then found their scoring groove in the final two events of the night. In the 50 freestyle,
Joe Mercurio was the top qualifier as he posted a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 20.02 seconds, breaking his own record from last season. The in the final, Mercurio just missed defending his title, taking second in 20.21 seconds for Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
Joseph Vizza and
Auston Ramsay also scored in the 50 freestyle, as Vizza tied for tenth in 20.73 seconds and Ramsay tied for 12
th in 20.76 seconds.
The final event was the 200 freestyle relay, where Fordham came away with a bronze finish as Ramsay, Vizza, Mercurio, and
Travis Monahan clocked in with a school record time of 1:21.10, breaking the previous mark of 1:21.23, set last year.
The Atlantic 10 Championship continues with day three on Friday at 10:00 AM with the preliminaries of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and three-meter dive with the finals at 6:30 PM.
