Bronx, N.Y. – The last time Fordham defeated Richmond in a men's basketball game, Fordham junior guard
Joseph Chartouny was 13 years old. Luckily for the Rams Chartouny grew up to become a well-rounded player as he scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both career-highs, to lead Fordham to a 69-65 Atlantic 10 overtime win over the Spiders in the Rose Hill Gym on Wednesday night.
With the win, Fordham snaps a 14-game losing streak to the Spiders and improves to 6-8 overall, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond falls to 3-11 overall, 1-1 in the conference.
Chartouny scored six of the nine Fordham overtime points while also recording five steals, three assists and two blocks, while freshman guard/forward
Ivan Raut added 12 points and added six rebounds and senior guard
Will Tavares finished with ten points.
Richmond scored the first point of overtime on a Khwan Fore free throw 1:46 into the session before a Raut three-pointer put the Rams up two, 63-61, with 2:46 remaining.
After a Nathan Cayo free throw made it a one-point game, back-to-back Chartouny layups boosted the Fordham lead to five, with 1:22 on the clock.
Richmond got the Fordham lead down to two, 67-65, on a De'Monte Buckingham free throw with two seconds left but Chartouny grabbed the rebound on an intentional miss of the second charity shot and sank two free throws to secure the win.
The game was as close as could be with neither team holding more than a seven-point lead. That seven-point advantage was held by the Rams, who were up 47-40, with 13:38 left in the second half following a Chartouny three-pointer.
Later in the half, Fordham took a 58-53 lead on a three-point play from David Pekarek with 4:57 remaining in regulation but Buckingham hit a three-pointer 20 seconds later and, after a Pekarek layup at the 2:24 mark, Buckingham made it a two-point game, 60-58, with a layup with 2:02 left.
The score remained 60-58 until a Jacob Gilyard layup with 21 seconds left tied the game for the seventh time. Fordham had a chance to win in regulation but a Tavares layup rolled off and a Pekarek tip-in fell out.
