Newark, N.J. – The Fordham women's tennis team kicked off their 2018 campaign at the four-team NJIT Women's Winter Invitational at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility, with
Carina Ma winning the A singles draw.
Ma defeated Army's Kirby Einck 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 in the quarterfinals and Rutgers' Katherine Muzik in the semifinals 6-1, 6-0 before defeating Army's Ana Joyner in the championship.
In B singles play,
Gianna Insogna defeated NJIT's Natacha Minc 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Army's Hannah Boubel 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the semifinals before falling in the finals to NJIT's Holly Matson 6-0, 6-0.
Tatiana Grigoryan fell to Rutgers' Chloe Lee 7-6 (1), 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
In C singles,
Maia Balce defeated Army's Bridget Mayfield 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 and NJIT's Alba Rosas 2-6, 6-3, 10-2 in the quarterfinals before falling 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals to Rutgers' Jacqueline Cochrane. Army's Sasha Inchauste defeated
Whitney Weisberg 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16.
In B doubles, Balce and
Carolina Sa defeated NJIT's Minc/Hamilton 7-6 (2) in the quarterfinals before falling to Army's McCormack/Funaro 6-4 in the semifinals.
In the consolation matches of the A singles draw,
Estelle Wong defeated NJIT's Mayar Eltony 8-5, while Grigoryan defeated Army's Genevieve McCormick 8-3 in the B singles consolation bracket.
In consolation of the A doubles draw, Ma/Wong defeated Army's Joyner/Allen 7-6 (3).
The Rams return to action Saturday January 27 when they travel to South Orange, N.J. to take on Seton Hall.
