West Point, N.Y. – The Fordham women's tennis team continued their 2017 fall season at the Eastern Championships where
Estelle Wong and
Carina Ma won the A doubles title.
Wong and Ma started play in the A doubles draw defeating Fairfield's Sarah Stuhlman and Anna Komer 6-1 in the round of 16 and besting St. Bonaventure's Gabriella Bowe and Kahlei Reisinger 6-4 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they defeated Army's Melanie Allen and Anastasiya Joyner 6-1 before besting Syracuse's Maria Tritou and Nicole Mitchell in hard fought 7-6 (7-5) tie breaker.
Also in A doubles,
Alexis Zobeideh and
Tatiana Grigoryan defeated Fairfield's Shelby Vertula and Emily Lombardi 6-1 in the opening round and Army's Danna Funaro and Sera Martorelli in the round of 16 before falling to Allen/Joyner 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
In B doubles,
Maia Balce and
Gianna Insogna defeated Wagner's Carolyn Gibson and Rina Baynes 6-2, Colgate's Lauren O'Brien and Mackenzie Deeter 6-4 in the round of 16 and Army's Alana Larcombe and Abigail Waldman 7-6 (2) in the quarterfinals before falling to Hannah Boubel and Sasha Inchauste 6-2 in the semifinals. Also in B doubles,
Carolina Sa and
Whitney Weisberg defeated Leslie Frankland and Bridget Mayfield 7-6 (4) in the opening round before falling to Syracuse's Dina Hegab and Ester Mesh 6-1 in the round of 16.
In B singles, Balce defeated Sacred Heart's Sabrina Navarro 6-3, 6-2 and Army's Gloria Son 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Wagner's Fidan Hkalilzade 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 in the quarterfinals.
In C singles, Insogna defeated Bryant's Stefanie Arroyo 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the opening round before falling to Fairleigh Dickinson's Liza Rachenko 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16.
In D singles, Weisberg defeated NJIT's Mikaya Hamilton 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32 before dropping her match with Lehigh's Catie Meighan 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16.
In the B singles consolation draw,
Estelle Wong defeated Fairfield's Diana Prinos 8-1 and Anamaria Vladescu 8-4 in the quarterfinals before falling to Quinnipiac 8-3 in the semifinals.
The Rams return to action September 29-October 1 as they travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to compete at the Hofstra Invitational.
