Washington, D.C. – Fordham's Massimiliano Mirachi scored six times, while
Alex Jahns made 13 saves in net, as the Fordham water polo team made it a clean sweep of MAWPC action this weekend with an 8-7 win over 18
th-ranked George Washington on Sunday afternoon.
It was Fordham's first win over a ranked-opponent since 2010, when the Rams defeated then-#16 Concordia (Calif.). The win improves Fordham to 7-3 on the season, with a 3-0 mark in the MAWPC. The 3-0 start to conference action is the best for Fordham in over two decades.
After an opening quarter which saw each team score four times, the two defenses took over. George Washington scored the only goal in the second on a penalty shot, while Fordham scored the lone marker of the third quarter to leave the game tied at five, heading into the final period.
In the fourth, the Rams took a 7-5 lead when
Massimiliano Mirarchi scored an extra-man goal and followed that with an even strength goal.
Diego Delgado then extended the lead to 8-5 on the Rams' next possession, their largest lead of the game.
Massimiliano Mirarchi had a big day with six goals on Sunday.
George Washington would score twice to close to within one with 39 seconds left, but Fordham's defense came up with the big stop to close out the upset win.
For Fordham, Mirachi had six goals and an assist, while
Jake Miller-Tolt had a goal, three assists, and two steals. Delgado had the final goal for Fordham with Philip Wang having an assist and a steal. In net,
Alex Jahns made 13 stops to go with four steals.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action Sunday, October 1
st, when the Rams play at nationally-ranked Bucknell, beginning at 1:30 PM.
