Water Polo Upsets #18 George Washington for 3-0 Start to League Play

Mirachi’s Six Goals Lead Fordham to First Win Over Ranked Opponent Since 2010

Washington, D.C. – Fordham's Massimiliano Mirachi scored six times, while Alex Jahns made 13 saves in net, as the Fordham water polo team made it a clean sweep of MAWPC action this weekend with an 8-7 win over 18th-ranked George Washington on Sunday afternoon.

It was Fordham's first win over a ranked-opponent since 2010, when the Rams defeated then-#16 Concordia (Calif.).  The win improves Fordham to 7-3 on the season, with a 3-0 mark in the MAWPC.  The 3-0 start to conference action is the best for Fordham in over two decades.

After an opening quarter which saw each team score four times, the two defenses took over.  George Washington scored the only goal in the second on a penalty shot, while Fordham scored the lone marker of the third quarter to leave the game tied at five, heading into the final period.

In the fourth, the Rams took a 7-5 lead when Massimiliano Mirarchi scored an extra-man goal and followed that with an even strength goal.  Diego Delgado then extended the lead to 8-5 on the Rams' next possession, their largest lead of the game.
