NCBWA Release
Lynchburg, Va. – A total of 31 standout freshmen college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the 2017 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced today. Among those standouts was Fordham freshman
Alvin Melendez (Whitestone, N.Y./Cardozo), who earned Second Team honors as a relief pitcher.
The 2017 NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 29 different schools and 15 different conferences.
Melendez joins teammate
Kyle Martin as a Freshman All-American, as Martin was named to the
Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American team last week. This is Melendez's second postseason honor, as he was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team along with Martin.

A two-way player for the Rams, Melendez earned Second Team Freshman All-American honors, after leading the Atlantic 10 with a 0.76 ERA. He also posted a 3-0 record with six saves in 17 appearances this past season. He held opponents to a .210 batting average and recorded 22 strikeouts over 23.2 innings pitched.

Today's award comes on the same day that Melendez was selected as the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League (HCBL) Rawlings Player of the Week.
Melendez batted .571 for the Riverhead Tomcats in the first week of the season going 8-for-14. He provided a spark in the top of the lineup for Riverhead scoring seven runs and stealing four bases. On June 3rd in a 5-5 tie with the Long Island Road Warriors, Melendez went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored along with two stolen bases.
