Fairfax, Va. - The Fordham track & field team began competition at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Virginia. After day one, Fordham is tied for sixth in the men's competition and 11
th in the women's.
On the men's side Rhode Island concluded day one with 78.5 points which is good for a 30.5 point lead over second place Massachusetts (48). George Mason is in third with 46 points, followed by Saint Louis (32), Saint Joseph's (18.5), VCU (15), Fordham (15), Duquesne (13), Davidson (5) and La Salle (2).
Nick Regan finished sixth in javelin throw.
Before even the first event took place, Fordham already had to overcome the loss of
Brian Cook,
Michael Petersen, and
Louis Santelli due to injury. However, other Rams stepped up, led by freshman
Ryan Kutch who earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 10,000 meter run, winning the event in a season-best time of 31:04.68.
Junior
Nicholas Regan also scored for the Rams, placing sixth in the javelin throw with a distance of 190' 7" and
Andrew Byrne scored in the high jump, placing seventh, clearing 6' 3/12".
Other top performers for Fordham included
Jared Benn (10
th – 48.58) in the 400 meter dash,
Devin Rocks (15
th – 1:55.98) and
Sean Phillips (20
th – 1:57.22) in the 800 meter run,
Richard Webber (17
th – 11.22) in the 100 meter dash,
Jake Duckworth (20
th – in the 10,000 meter run and
Vaughan Taylor (9
th – 159' 1") in the javelin throw.
On the women's side, Duquesne scored 48 points in the six women's events scored to take the lead after day one. Dayton is currently in second place with 47 points, followed by Massachusetts (42.5), Rhode Island (41.5), George Mason (20), Davidson (20), VCU (14.5), George Washington (12), La Salle (10), Saint Joseph's (8.5), Fordham (5) and Saint Louis (4).
Sophomore
Laurel Fisher was the lone scorer, as she took fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a season-best time of 10:55.53.
Mary Kate Kenny Sets Two School Records
Mary Kate Kenny also had a stellar day setting two school records. Kenny broke the 100 and 200 meter school records, both previously held by Sherilyn Groeninger, with times of 12.33 and 25.72, respectively. Groeninger's previous times were 12.45 (2010) and 25.30 (2011), respectively. Kenny's 200 meter time also qualified her for the ECAC Championship.
Other top performers for Fordham on the women's side included
Abigail Taylor (10
th – 37:42.45) in the 10,000 meter run,
Merissa Wright (13
th – 2:12.56) in the 800 meter run and
Morgan Menzzasalma finished 13
th in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.75.
The final day of competition begin at
8:45 AM on Sunday.
