Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham University men's basketball head coach
Jeff Neubauer announced the signing of transfers
Tre Evans (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North/Kilgore) and
Antwon Portley (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster/Saint Peter's) to Letters of Intent for the 2017-2018 season.
Â
Evans, a 6-2, 185-pound guard, just completed his first year at Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas, where he averaged 15.5 ppg, 2.3 rpg and 2.3 apg. He started 19 of the 20 games he appeared in and shot .835 (96-115) from the free throw stripe, tops in the region, as well as .470 (87-185) from the field and .406 (39-96) from behind the arc. Evans netted double figures in 17 of the 20 games he played in, including five 20-point games.
Â
"Tre has shown that he can play with the ball in his hands and off the ball," said Neubauer. "He is a terrific young man who comes from a coaching family. I'm eager to watch him make threes in the Rose Hill Gym."
Â
A graduate of Edmond North High School in Edmond, Oklahoma, Evans played for his father, Terry Evans, a former sharpshooting guard at Oklahoma. He was a first team selection on the 2016 The Oklahoman's Big All-City boy's basketball team, leading the Huskies to a 27-1 record, with their only loss coming in the Class 6A state semifinals. He averaged 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists.
Â
Prior to Edmond North, Evans played for one season at Putnam City West High School, averaging 12.0 ppg in 2014-2015, and two seasons at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
Â
Portley, a 6-4, 165-pound guard, will sit out the 2017-2018 season due to NCAA transfer regulations and will have two years for eligibility remaining. As a sophomore at Saint Peter's last year he averaged 7.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg and 2.1 apg, appearing in all 36 games, starting 12.
Â
"Antwon is a proven Division one player," said Neubauer. "It is very difficult to average 14 points a game in college basketball and Antwon did it as a freshman. Antwon can really shoot the ball from deep. We will help him improve his body and his three-point shot. He is super young man who is the son of a coach."
Â
In his first year with the Peacocks, Portley started all 30 games and was named to the MAAC All-Rookie team and was named MAAC Rookie of the Week three times. He averaged 14.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg and 1.9 apg. He recorded 22 games with 10+ points with nine 20-point performances, including a career-high 30 points against Brown on Nov. 13 in his collegiate debut.
Â
Portley is a graduate of Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Texas, where he was a four-year letter winner with the boy's basketball team. He averaged 16.0 points per game as a senior in 2014-2015 and connected on 46 percent of his three-point attempts as the team went 34-4. Portley was named the District 14-5A Co-Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region 2-5A team. He scored 21 points in a 59-47 win against Ozen to power Lancaster to the Texas 5A State title and earned a spot on the University Interscholastic League All-Tournament team.
