Newport News, Va. – Fordham women's tennis standouts
Carina Ma and
Maia Balce have earned Atlantic 10 postseason accolades, the league announced on Thursday afternoon. Ma garnered First Team All-Conference recognition, while Balce earned Second Team honors.
Ma, a sophomore transfer from the University of Pittsburgh, compiled a 23-7 singles record from the top position, including a team best 6-1 record in conference play. Ma also went an impressive 20-10 in doubles play, primarily at No. 1 doubles with partner
Estelle Wong.
Balce, a freshman from Manila, Philippines, put together a 20-7 singles record in her first season in the Bronx, mostly from the third position. Balce partnered with Ma and
Alexis Zobeideh for most of the year but then found a winning combination with
Carolina Sa, her partner at third doubles for the end of the regular season and Atlantic 10 Championship play. The freshman finished with an overall doubles record of 15-4.
This is Balce's second A-10 honor after garnering a Rookie of the Week award in March.
At the Atlantic 10 tournament, Ma defeated Rhode Island's Mihaela Codreanu 6-2, 7-5 and partnered with Wong for a 6-2 victory in first doubles. Balce defeated La Salle's Ally Santerelli 6-2, 6-1 and teamed with Sa for a 6-0 win in third doubles.
The Rams closed out the 2016-2017 season, one of the best in recent times, with a 20-4 record.
