Men’s Tennis Wins Two

Rams upend Coppin State and St. Francis

Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis squad took advantage of a gorgeous spring day to pick up a pair of wins, defeating Coppin State, 6-1, and St. Francis (NY), 4-3, on the Hawthorn Rooney Courts.

With the wins, Fordham improves to 10-6 on the season and have won three of its last four.

In the first match, the Rams opened play by taking the doubles point. Tomas Cosmai and Allen Thornes won at first doubles over Gabriel Franco and Christian Duchnak, 6-1, and Joseph Kavaloski and Steven Duka upended Zaipo Oula and Andres Diaz at second double, 6-0. Harris Durkovic and Cameron Posillico made it a clean sweep in doubles play for Fordham, taking third double over Andre Sturniola and Gavin Lewis, 6-2.

The Rams then won five of the six singles matches, four in straight sets, for the victory. Fabian Mauritzson defeated Duchnak at first singles, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, while Allen Thornes took third singles from Diaz, 6-1, 6-2. Posillico knocked off Sturniola at the fourth position, 6-4, 6-3, while Durkovic took fifth singles from Franco, 6-0, 6-3, and Gabriel Mashaal won at the sixth spot over Oula, 6-2, 6-2

Against St. Francis, Fordham again opened play by winning the doubles point as Cosmai and Thornes took second doubles from Zurab Tskhakaia and Stefan Gmijovic, 6-1, and then Victor Li and Mauritzson clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Guillermo Artiz and Alejandro Ridruejo at the first position. Kavaloski and Nick Borak were up on Pablo Blasco-Torres and Javier Navarro, 4-2, at third doubles when the match was halted.

Singles play opened with Kavaloski taking sixth singles from Tim Cecere, 6-0, 6-0, before the Terriers tied the match 2-2 with wins at fourth and second singles. But Li pulled out a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Ridruejo at the first position to give the Rams a 4-3 lead before a St. Francis win at fifth singles knotted the match at three.

Mauritzson broke the tie and gave the Rams the win with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Navarro at third singles.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, April 15, as they host Siena College on the Hawthorn Rooney Courts at 12:00 p.m.
