Orlando, Fa. – One of the best Fordham women's tennis seasons in recent times came to an end today as the third-seeded Rams fell to second-seeded University of Massachusetts, 4-0, in the semifinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship at the USTA National Campus.
Fordham opened the match by dropping the doubles point, losing the two completed doubles matches.
Carina Ma and
Estelle Wong were upended by UMass' Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley, 6-0, at first doubles while
Alexis Zobeideh and
Mayu Sato fell at second doubles to Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic, 6-2.
Maia Balce and
Carolina Sa were up 5-2 in third doubles when the Minutewomen clinched the doubles point.
In singles play, Wong fell at second singles to Crawford, 6-1, 6-1, while Balce was knocked off at third singles by Yrazusta, 6-2, 6-0. UMass clinched the match when Woosley defeated Sato, 6-3, 6-1, at third singles.
Fordham's
Gianna Insogna took the first set at fifth singles from Laura Moreno, 6-4, and was up 3-2 in the second set when the match was halted.
The Rams close out the 2016-2017 season with a 20-4 record.
