Orlando, Fla. – The third-seeded Fordham women's tennis team defeated No. 11 Rhode Island 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The Rams got off to a good start once again, taking the doubles point as
Carina Ma and
Estelle Wong defeated Rachel Smilansky and Emily Zargham 6-2 in first doubles and
Alexis Zobeideh and
Mayu Sato bested Mihaela Codreanu and Tiara Higuchi 6-3 in second doubles.
Maia Balce and
Carolina Sa were up 5-4 in third doubles when the Rams clinched the point.
Fordham carried that momentum into singles play, where
Destiny Grunin got another point on the board for the Rams, making quick work of Jordan Rucks 6-1, 6-0 in sixth singles, then
Carina Ma defeated Codreanu 6-2, 7-5 in first singles and
Estelle Wong clinched the match in second singles, defeating Emily Zargham 7-6, 6-1.
Fordham will face Massachusetts tomorrow's semifinals at 10 a.m. This is the second A-10 semifinal appearance in the last three years for the Rams, the last coming in 2015 against VCU.
