Bronx, N.Y. – Six Fordham pitchers combined for a five-hitter, while
Brian Goulard and
Reiss Knehr each drove in a pair of runs as the Fordham Rams completed a three-game series sweep of the Sacred Heart Pioneers with an 8-1 win at Houlihan Park on Sunday.
With the win, Fordham improved to 6-9 on the season, while Sacred Heart fell to 5-13.
Fordham wasted little time getting on the board with two runs in the first inning. The Rams loaded the bases with one out on infield singles by
Jake Baker and
Luke Stampfl and a walk to
Justin Bardwell.
Matthew Kozuch then plated Baker with a sacrifice fly, while
Brian Goulard singled home Stampfl.
Sacred Heart cut the Fordham lead to 2-1 in the third on an RBI-single by Alex Perry, but the Rams responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 4-1 edge. Baker and Stampfl both walked to start the inning, followed by an RBI-single from Bardwell to score Baker. After a double play, Goulard reached on an infield single, which scored Stampfl from third.
The Rams tacked on three more runs in the sixth, taking advantage of three Pioneer errors in the inning. Fordham got two runs off errors, while the third came a sacrifice fly by
Reiss Knehr.
Jake Bernardo was one of six Fordham pitchers to combine for the five-hitter on Sunday.
Knehr then capped the scoring in the eighth, as he blasted a solo home run to right for his first of the season.
Six Fordham pitchers combined to hold Sacred Heart to just five hits in the game.
Kyle Martin (2-0) started the game with a scoreless inning, while
Matthew Ogozaly allowed one run on two hits over two innings of work.
Brian Weissert and
Marc Bisogno each threw two innings of one-hit relief with
Jake Bernardo and
Alexander Hernandez each throwing a scoreless inning.
At the plate, Goulard with 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Knehr was 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Baker and Stampfl each had two hits and two runs scored in the contest with Bardwell going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, March 21
st, as the Rams host Iona College at Houlihan Park, beginning at 3:30 PM. This is a change from the original schedule.
