WNIT Bracket
Bronx, N.Y. -- The Fordham women's basketball team's 2016-17 season is not over! The Rams have been selected to compete in the 20th edition of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and will play at Georgetown on Friday, time still to be determined. It will mark the fourth time in the past five years that the program has participated in postseason play, either in the WNIT or the NCAA Tournament, under head coach
Stephanie Gaitley. From 2013-2015, the team played in the postseason all three years, reaching the second round of the WNIT twice.
"We are super excited to be recognized as a postseason team," Gaitley said, "It's a recognition of all our hard work paying off -- the senior class have now led us to three postseason bids!"
The Rams will face the Hoyas in our nation's capital on Friday, the ninth time the two schools have met and the first since 2008. The Hoyas have won the last three contests between the two teams.
Fordham (21-11) secured their ninth 20-win season in school history, and fourth under Gaitley, and finished the regular season in fifth place of the Atlantic 10, reaching the quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship. Fordham boasted a strong case for inclusion, having the most wins (6) against WNIT or NCAA schools among teams ranked 50+ in RPI, including three conference winners in Dayton, Albany, and UNC Asheville. The Rams have been led by First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team selection
G'mrice Davis this season, who became the second Ram in school history to average a double-double, with 14.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game this year. For nearly the entire campaign, the junior forward has ranked second in all of Division I in all rebounding categories as well as double-doubles (22).
Fordham's three seniors,
Danielle Burns,
Hannah Missry, and
Danielle Padovano, have now reached the postseason three times in their careers. The trio have tallied 81 wins during their stay in the Bronx, an average of 20+ wins per year.
The Rams are one of five A-10 teams that will compete in the WNIT, tying the Mid-American Conference for most in the field, alongside Saint Louis, George Washington, Saint Joseph's, and Duquesne.
