Geneva, Ohio – The final day of the Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship has wrapped up at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, and what a day it was.
The men's competition saw George Washington capture its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship with a score of 562.5 points, followed by La Salle (528), Massachusetts (449), Fordham (414.5), Saint Louis (401), George Mason (394), St. Bonaventure (391), and Davidson (275). For Fordham, it was the Rams' best finish since finishing fourth in 2010.
The night of finals started off with a bang for Fordham, as
Liam Semple won the 1650 freestyle event in an NCAA "B" cut time of 15:27.42, earning First Team All-Atlantic 10 for the first time in his career. Chris Sleutjes also had a strong performance, taking sixth in the event in 15:45.61.
Joseph Vizza medaled individually for the third time on Saturday.
Next up was the 200 backstroke final, where
Miguel Mattox won the "B" final for ninth overall in a school record time of 1:47.87, while
Isiah Magsino was 13
th in 1:50.72. Mattox broke the previous mark of 1:48.99 by Keanan Faruq in 2001.
Fordham just missed out on another event win in the 100 freestyle, as
Joseph Vizza was touched out at the finish by .09 seconds, but still managed a bronze finish in a school record time of 44.43 seconds, breaking the old mark of 44.89 by Devon Morris in 2012.
Joe Mercurio also scored in the event, as he won the "B" final for ninth overall in 45.30 seconds.
The 200 breaststroke event saw
Sean Finlay make the championship final and he didn't disappoint, setting his second school record of the week. He placed seventh in a school record time of 2:02.10, bettering Ben Dwyer's mark of 2:02.17 in 2014.
The Rams then sent three swimmers into the finals of the 200 butterfly, where
Greg Lombana and
Chris Viera finished sixth (1:49.51) and seventh (1:50.23), respectively, while
Tommy Christensen was 16
th (1:52.75).
The last individual event was the men's three-meter dive, as
Christopher Craig scored 14
th overall with a total of 218.50.
The final event of the championship was the 400 freestyle relay. Fordham's group of
Travis Monahan, Mercurio, Semple, and Vizza registered the 11
th school record of the week for the men, as they placed sixth in 3:00.98, breaking the old mark of 3:01.54, set in 2009.
