Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham water polo team started its final conference weekend on Saturday with a pair of games at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center. The Rams opened the day with a 12-8 victory over the Navy Midshipmen, while in the nightcap, George Washington outlasted Fordham, 11-9.
With the split, Fordham is now 15-9 on the year, 5-3 in the MAWPC East Division.
In game one, four different Rams had multi-goal games as Fordham topped the Navy Midshipmen, 12-8.
After a 2-2 start after the first quarter, Fordham took charge with a five-goal second period to take a 7-4 lead.
Joseph Agabs and
Phillip Wang started the quarter with extra-man goals, while
Cameron Shewchuck,
Ian Watson, and
Samuel Varshisky rounded out the period's scoring.
The Rams continued to stay strong with the extra-man advantage, scoring twice to start the third quarter, as
Massimiliano Mirarchi and Watson netted goals to make it, 9-4.
Leading 10-5 entering the fourth quarter, Fordham extended the lead to six goals behind markers from Mirarchi and Varshisky and went on to win by a 12-8 final.
For Fordham, Mirarchi netted three goals and two assists, while Miller-Tolt, Watson, and Varshisky each had two goals. Miller-Tolt also added four assists and a season-high eight steals in the match. In net,
Alex Jahns had six saves in three-plus quarters, while
Patrick Coffey had two over the final six minutes of the fourth.
In game two, George Washington's Andrew Mavis scored five time to lead the Colonials to an 11-9 win.
Everything came down to the final quarter with the score tied at eight. Atakan Destici scored on a tip shot right at the beginning of the period, while Miller-Tolt responded with his third goal of the game to knot the game at nine. Mavis followed with his fifth goal of the game to put the Colonials back on top. Four minutes later, George Washington extended the lead to two on a marker by Pierce Deamer.
The Rams could not come up with the equalizing goals, falling by an 11-9 count.
For Fordham, Miller-Tolt had three goals, two assists, and five steals with Mirarchi adding two goals, six steals, and three blocks.
Ethan Vandeventer notched a pair of goals with Agabs and Wang rounding out the scoring with one goal each. Jahns finished with ten stops in net.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Sunday, November 5
th, when the Rams host Johns Hopkins at 10:00 Am, followed by a 3:00 PM showdown with #18 Bucknell.
