Rowing Competes at Head of the Schuylkill

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham rowing team competed at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, October 28, where the Rams raced four 8+ lineups in three different events: The Collegiate Frosh/Novice 8+, the Club Championships 8+s, and the regular Championship 8+.  Each of the four crews locked in to a rhythm and turned in strong performances. 
 
The races began with the Novice/Frosh 8+ event.  For four of the women in the boat, this was their very first time racing.  Fordham finished in a time of 18:21.55 but incurred a 30 second penalty for missing a course buoy.  Even with the penalty, the novices placed 16th in a field of 31 crews.

Fordham's 2nd and 3rd Varsity 8+s both competed in the Club Championship 8+ event.  The 2nd Varsity boat had a very strong row and finished seventh out of 43 crews.  Their total time to complete the course was 16:28.80.  The 3rd Varsity 8+ crew finished a little over a minute behind their teammates to claim 24th place in a time of 17:31.75.

The 1st Varsity 8+ closed out the day in the Championship 8+ event where they raced a smaller, but very competitive field.  The 1st Varsity women came in less than a second behind Drexel, a team that won the Dad Vail championships last year, to claim fourth place.  However, the crew opened up a large gap behind them to beat fifth place, conference competitor Duquesne by more than 20 seconds.

All told, all three varsity 8 shells defeated their Atlantic 10 competition entered in the regatta (Duquesne and Saint Joseph's) and in the Club event the Fordham A entries defeated the A-10 A's and the Fordham B entry defeated the other A-10 B's boats. The Fordham
 
The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta was Fordham's last head race of the year as the Ram 1st and 2nd 8's finish the head season undefeated against A-10 competition. 
 
The team will conclude its fall racing season next Sunday, November 5, at the Fall Metropolitan Championships in New Rochelle, N.Y.
