Storrs, Conn. – After opening its season at Marist on Thursday, the Fordham swimming & diving team continued its opening road swing in Storrs, Connecticut on Saturday, taking on the UConn Huskies. The Rams came through with some strong performances, but came up short in the team scores, as the women lost by a score of 155-140, while the men fell by a 157-135 count.
The Rams' highlights included 13 event wins, seven of which were on the men's side.
Sophomore
Joseph Vizza and senior
Joe Mercurio had a big hand in those seven wins, as each won two individual events, while also being a part of both relay victories. Vizza captured first in the 100 (47.01) and 200 (1:41.77) freestyle events, while Mercurio placed first in the 50 freestyle (21.48) and the 100 butterfly (50.79)
In the relays,
Wendy Espina-Esquivel
Vizza and Mercurio joined
Travis Monahan and
Isiah Magsino on the winning 200 medley relay quad in 1:33.46, while also joining Monahan and
Bryce Bollesen for a the win in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:07.28.
The Rams' final winner on the men's side was freshman
Nathaniel Guenther, who took the top spot in the 400 IM in 4:15.28.
On the women's side,
Wendy Espina-Esquivel and
Amelia Bullock were both dual event winners, sweeping the diving and butterfly events, respectively. Espina-Esquivel scored 261.89 on the one-meter board and 268.57 the three-meter to win the diving competition, while Bullock clocked in at 56.58 seconds (100) and 2:03.89 (200) for first place in the butterfly events.
Other winners for the Rams included
Bayley Frierson in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:32.25 and
Caitlin McNary in the 200 freestyle events.
The Fordham swimming & diving team will next be in action on October 28
th, when the Rams compete at Boston University, beginning at 1:30 PM.
