Hadley, Mass. - The Fordham Women's Rowing team competed in the inaugural Hadley Chase Regatta, hosted by UMass on their home course in Hadley, Mass., on Saturday with the Varsity 8 A boat taking second place overall.

"This was the first year U Mass hosted the Hadley Chase Regatta and was our only opportunity to race the defending A-10 Conference Champions this fall," said head coach Ted Bonanno. "We knew it would be a real challenge to beat UMass on their home course. Both our first and second varsity eights were up to this challenge, with our varsity beating UMass by 35 seconds and our JV was 15 seconds faster than their conference opponent. Our 3V eight also raced extremely well. They finished less than four seconds behind UMass and third among the 3V eights, while also finishing ahead of one varsity and two JV eights. This was an excellent day of racing for Fordham!"

Fordham entered three 8+s in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 8+ event with the performance of the Fordham A crew being the highlight of the day.  The A boat started fourth in the order and passed the UMass and Marist A crews to finish second with a time of 18:09.6.  Their second place finish qualified the Rams to compete in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 8+ 500 meter dash in which only the top four finishers participated.  Again, the Fordham A crew placed second with a time of 1:41.7, less than three seconds behind Dartmouth A.

The Fordham B crew began the race 13th in the starting order and finished tenth overall.  They had a very strong row and managed to overtake the Coast Guard and Fairfield A crews as well as the UMass B crew finishing with a time of 19:25.5.

The Fordham C crew overtook the Fairfield and Amherst B crews to move up from their original starting order and complete the course in 21:13.6.  They finished 18th overall in a field of 23.

"Each of the three crews built upon their performances from the previous weekend and competed exceptionally well today at the Hadley Chase," said assistant coach Alyssa Dewey. "We will take advantage of this momentum as we continue our preparation for the Head of the Charles Regatta next Saturday in Boston."
