Newport News, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced its weekly swimming and diving awards this afternoon with Fordham sweeping the men's awards. Junior
Liam Semple (San Diego, Calif.) was named Performer of the Week for the first time this season, while freshman
Joseph Vizza (North Wales, Pa.) was selected as the Rookie of the Week for the third time this year.
Both swimmers were integral parts of the Rams, posting a mid-week win over Iona and following with Fordham's first-ever victory over UMass on Saturday.
Semple began the week by winning the 200 freestyle event at Iona in 1:43.75, while taking second in the 100 freestyle in 48.47 seconds. On Saturday against UMass, he won the 1000 freestyle event with a season-best time of 9:33.60, while later winning the 500 freestyle in 4:38.57. He was also a part of the Rams' 200 freestyle relay "B" team that took third.
Vizza started his week by taking first in the 500 freestyle at Iona in 4:41.73, while also being a part of the winning 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Then on Saturday, he was a dual event winner against UMass, winning the 100 (46.87) and 200 (1:41.54) freestyle events. He was also a part of the winning 200 medley relay and the meet-clinching 200 freestyle relay, which set a new season-best time of 1:23.92.
Semple, Vizza, and the rest of the Rams now prepare for the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held February 15-18 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
