Bronx, N.Y. – Former Fordham track and field standout Mike Kearney, FCRH '08, will be running in the 2016 New York City Marathon on November 6. And he will be running with a purpose. That purpose will be to raise funds for the
Katie McBride Foundation which honors the memory of Katie McBride and the families of all childhood leukemia victims and other life-threatening diseases.
Â
Besides Kearney's connection with Fordham, the men's basketball program also has a special connection with the Katie McBride Foundation as Katie's brother, Mike, GABELLI '13, served as a basketball manager and the team has supported the foundation by appearing at Katie's Run.
Â
"I met Mr. McBride at the Fordham Track and Field Golf outing this year when he and assistant basketball coach Mike DePaoli joined us to speak about The Katie McBride Foundation," said Kearney. "They were looking for a Fordham Track alum to be part of their Marathon Team to keep it in the Fordham Family. The New York City Marathon has always been a great event to watch each year but never something I thought I'd have the opportunity to participate in. After speaking with Mr. McBride and Coach DePaoli, I knew that joining their team and volunteering to run was an easy decision to make. I come from a large family and have been raised on the Jesuit tradition, getting involved with the Katie McBride Foundation was something I wanted to do and represent."
Â
Katie McBride succumbed to Burkitt's Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer, in 2008. Â Katie's Run, a project of the Katie McBride Foundation, honors the memory of Katie and the families of all childhood leukemia victims and other life-threatening diseases. This event's primary objective is to honor Katie while raising important funds and awareness of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island and the family support services it provides. Over the past seven years, the Katie McBride Foundation has raised $100,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.
Â
Kearney was a four-year letterman with the Fordham track squad, serving as a team captain in 2007-2008. He was a member of the IC4A-qualifying distance medley relay at the IC4A indoor championships in 2008. He was named the 2008 Outdoor Track and Field MVP.
