Final Results
West Point, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis team continued its 2016 fall season this weekend by participating at the West Point Invitational where
Gianna Insogna won the C singles flight and
Destiny Grunin advanced to the championship in the D singles flight.
Insogna started play in C Singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Quinnipiac's Layla Rodriguez and then defeated Amanda Helminsky of NJIT in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Insogna bested Army's Danna Funaro 7-7, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals where she defeated Army's Gloria Son 6-2, 7-5 before taking down Quinnipiac's Nicole Katzarkov 6-7 (7-1), 6-4, 10-6 to take the C singles title.
Grunin started play in D singles with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over NJIT's Ines Vujkovac in the round of 16 and then defeated Lehigh's Leigh Friedman 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Grunin bested Army's Stella Fedele 6-0, 6-4 before falling to Seton Hall's Katie Kim 4-6, 2-6 in the D singles finals.
Also competing in A singles, was
Estelle Wong who advanced to the quarterfinals, opening with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Colgate's Lauren Hyland and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lehigh's Christina Auyeng in the round of 16 before falling to Boise State's Hanna Kantenwein in the quarterfinals 1-6, 5-7.
Mayu Sato also advanced to the A singles quarterfinals with wins over NJIT's Rafaella Sampaio 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 and St. Bonaventure's Gabriella Bowe 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Binghamton's Michelle Eisenberg 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
In B singles,
Carina Ma advanced to the semifinals, first defeating Colgate's Jordan Williams 6-2, 6-2 and Quinnipiac's Jennifer Lu 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 before falling to Boise State's Milena Toseva 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Maia Balce fell to Quinnipiac's Sydney Young 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 in the round of 16.
Also competing in C singles was
Alexis Zobeideh who opened play with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Colgate's Kaelin Brittin. She then went on to beat Seton Hall's Thandy Kangwa 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 10-6 in the round of 16 and Bryant's Stefanie Arroyo, who retired due to injury, in the quarterfinals before falling to Quinnipiac's Nicole Katzarkov 4-6, 6-4, 6-10 in the semifinals.
Whitney Weisberg advanced to the finals in the D singles consolation bracket with wins over Wagner's Post 8-5, Sacred Heart's Maggie Glynne 8-7, 7-4 and Seton Hall's Anniek Jansen 8-4 before falling to NJIT's Natalija Tasovac 8-3.
The women's tennis squad returns to action from September 30-October 2nd as they compete at the Lehigh Invitational.
