ITA Release
Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham University women's tennis squad was honored recently by being named a 2016 ITA All-Academic Team. Additionally, six members of the team were recognized as ITA scholar athletes.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
Earning ITA Scholar Athlete honors for Fordham were
Destiny Grunin,
Gianna Insogna,
Carolina Sa,
Mayu Sato,
Whitney Weisberg and
Estelle Wong.
Grunin, a Psychology major who will be a senior in 2016-2017, was named Team MVP as a junior. She recorded a 16-8 singles record from either the fourth or fifth spot in 2015-2016 and was runner-up for the Gold singles title at the Great Dane Invitational.
Wong, a Communications and Media Studies major who will be a junior in 2016-2017, was named Second Team All-Conference as a sophomore. She won the B flight at the Sacred Heart Doubles Invitational alongside Weisberg and was second on the team with a 16-12 singles record, 12-7 in dual match play, from the first and second position.
Insogna, who is entering her sophomore season, compiled a 10-11 singles record as a freshman, nearly entirely from the sixth position, while Sa, a Finance major who will be a junior in 2016-2017, appeared in just two tournaments as a sophomore.
Sato, a Visual Arts major who will be a senior this coming season, was named First Team All-Conference as a junior. She was tops on the team with a 21-7 singles record, including 13-5 in dual matches and 8-2 in tournaments, between first and second singles.
Weisberg, a Marketing major, tallied a 5-11 singles record as a freshman, including a 4-6 record in tournament play, and a 5-9 record in doubles action.
