ITA Release
Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham University men's tennis squad was honored recently by being named a 2016 ITA All-Academic Team. Additionally, five members of the team were recognized as ITA scholar athletes.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
Earning ITA Scholar Athlete honors for Fordham were
Pedro Alonso,
Joey Brander,
Chris Caroli,
Harris Durkovic and
Joseph Kavaloski.
Alonso, who graduated in May with a degree in Finance with a concentration in Alternative Investments, was named the 2015-2016 Team MVP. He compiled a 10-8 overall record between first, second, and third singles and was 3-0 from the top spot, 1-3 from the second, and 6-3 from the third position.
Brander, a Communications & Media Studies major who will be a junior in 2016-2017, competed in four singles matches, with a 2-2 record, as a sophomore, while Caroli, a Finance major who will enter his sophomore year in 2016-2017, held a 3-4 singles record, in both fifth and sixth singles, and a 3-1 record from mid-March onward in dual match play.
Durkovic, a Finance major entering his junior season, appeared in 11 singles matches as a sophomore, tallying a 7-5 overall record, mostly from sixth singles, but also playing in three matches between fourth and fifth. Kavaloski, a Finance major who will be a junior in 2016-2017, led the team with 12 singles wins as a sophomore, bouncing around between 3-6 spots, but exceeding once called upon from the third position with a 5-1 record.
