Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis squad hosted its end of season awards luncheon at Gerbasi Ristorante on Arthur Avenue this past week where three members were honored for their accomplishments in 2015-2016.
"The luncheon is always one of my favorite events of the year. We get to recognize the winners of our team awards and celebrate the accomplishments of the team both on and off the court," said head coach Michael Sowter.
The Spirit Award, which is given to the student-athlete that demonstrates sportsmanship, leadership, motivation and integrity, was awarded to sophomore
Harris Durkovic. Durkovic consistently was one of the most vocal members of the year each and every day, compiling a 7-5 singles record, 4-1 at the sixth position, as well as five doubles wins. He also served as the team's SAAC representative, director of the team's Instagram account, and designated van driver.
Sophomore
Cameron Posillico received the team's Most Improved Player award. A sophomore walk-on, Posillico joined the team after attending the team's open tryouts in the fall. He battled to improve throughout the fall to secure a position in the starting lineup and finished with 10 singles wins on the season.
The Player of the Year Award was presented to freshman
Victor Li. During his first season with the Rams, he played predominantly at the No. 2 position, ending the year with a record of 10-3 and an eight-match winning streak. Li was also undefeated in Atlantic 10 conference play and was twice honored as the A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Additionally, senior
Pedro Alonso was named the men's tennis team MVP at the Block F Dinner on May 4. Alonso, the lone senior of the squad, posted a 10-8 single record of the Rams this year, playing at the first, second and third positions. His ten wins tied for second most on the team.
The Rams closed out the season with a 14-7 overall record, the most wins for a Fordham men's tennis squad since 2011-2012.
